- Don Dinero -

Había una vez un señor que todos los días se paseaba en una lujosa carroza por las calles de la ciudad, seguido de un gran séquito. Vestía un traje de seda natural, zapatos de cocodrilo y chistera adornada con cintas de plata y oro.

__  ¿Quién es este señor? – preguntó un niño a su padre.

__  Es Don Dinero. Tiene tanto dinero que podría hacer un río de monedas y darle la vuelta a la ciudad.

__  ¿Y en qué trabaja?

__  En nada, él sólo se dedica a ponerle precio a las cosas.

__  ¿Ponerle precio a las cosas, padre?

__  Sí. Todas las cosas, dice Don Dinero, tienen un precio y como él tiene tanto dinero, compra lo que le apetece.

Un día le dijo Don Dinero a uno de sus sirvientes:

__  Vayamos al campo para disfrutar de esta maravillosa mañana de primavera.

Marcharon hacia una campiña que no distaba de allí más de dos leguas y cuando llegaron, el campo estaba silencioso a pesar de los muchos ruiseñores y alondras que se veían parados en los árboles.

__  ¡Canten, avecillas!  ¡Canten! ¿Qué les pasa?

__  Pero los ruiseñores y alondras permanecían en silencio.

__  Tengo dinero suficiente para llenar de granos de trigo y maíz este bosque y así podrían comer hasta hartar. Si escucho uno solo de nuestros trinos, les prometo que les daré cuanto alimento quieran –les dijo Don Dinero.

Pero las aves permanecían en silencio. Entonces se encolerizó mucho y se marchó camino de una aldea que había por aquellos contornos.

Cuando llegó la comitiva a aquella aldea, salieron a recibirles todos los vecinos y Don Dinero, en un alarde de generosidad, ordenó a sus criados que arrojaran al aire cientos de monedas para que las recogieran los aldeanos.

Hombres,mujeres y niños se arremolinaron en torno a los criados, y recogieron las monedas que habían arrojado; después Don Dinero pasó a una casa de la aldea en la que vivía un matrimonio con su hijo de siete años. Después de saludar a sus padres,observó que el niño permanecía en silencio y muy serio.

__  Sonríe al señor, Pedrito –le dijo su madre.

Pero el niño continuaba callado y serio.

__  ¿No sabes, niño, que yo puedo comprar la aldea entera y convertirme en el dueño de tu casa? –le dijo con voz amenazante Don Dinero.

Pero el niño, no sólo no sonrió, sino que se fue asustado corriendo junto a su madre.

__  Yo creo que le ha dado miedo – dijo la madre para disculparlo- los zapatos que lleva usted de cocodrilo.

__  ¡Ah! – reparó Don Dinero-.No sé, no sé…Podría comprarte, Pedrito, cien juguetes de los más lindos para que juegues con ellos.

Pero el niño continuaba callado y serio.

Decepcionado Don Dinero, salió de la casa con su comitiva y ya de regreso a la ciudad, por el camino, iba pensando para sí:”Hay cosas que no se pueden comprar con dinero: el trino de los pájaros y la sonrisa de un niño”
